In January 2020, two people were bitten by coyotes in the Chicagoland area. While coyotes are unlikely to attack humans there are attacks on our pets, especially during the winter months.
Coyote mating and birthing season lasts through May, which means that coyotes may be more visible and aggressive during this time. Small dogs and cats are particularly vulnerable so owners need to be extra vigilant during this time. Although it’s not always possible to avoid coyotes, you can take precautions as to what to do to limit your likelihood of running into one.
HOW TO AVOID ENCOUNTERS
– Do not leave food outdoors for your pet. This could be viewed as an invitation for coyotes.
– Walk dogs on a short leash and monitor your surroundings.
– Always supervise your pet when you let them outside. Coyotes can easily climb a fence and snatch up your pet.
– Switch up your daily routine. Coyotes are smart and can learn your routine very easily. Try changing the times you and your pet go out for walks or take them outside at different times during the day.
– If you see a coyote, make loud noises, jump around, and create a lot of commotion. For the safety of residents and their pets, its best that coyotes stay wary of humans.
If you notice any abnormal activity by a coyote in your area, please contact your local animal control. You can reach the Kane County Animal Control at (630) 232-3555.
